What Are Churros?
Churros are fried pastry sticks tossed in a cinnamon sugar coating …aka little sticks of heaven. They’re usually served out of food trucks in Mexico and Spain.
They’re made with the same kind of Pâte à choux dough used to make French cruller donuts, eclairs, and cream puffs. Pâte à choux is a dough that uses steam to rise instead of yeast.
Traditionally this Mexican dessert are deep-fried in oil. Dealing with all that hot oil raises the risk of getting burned or making a huge mess. Luckily, we eliminate those problems when making churros in the Air Fryer.

How To Make Air Fryer Churros
- Mix the first 4 ingredients in a pan, bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
- Add flour and continue to mix thoroughly. Remove from heat and continue to mix until smooth and the dough comes away from the side of the pan.
- Add eggs one at a time, mix until smooth. Set aside to cool.
- Preheat Air Fryer to 400F/200C.
- Fill a cake decorator bag with dough and add a 1/2-inch star tip.
- Create sticks that are 3-4 inches in length by pushing the dough out of the bag onto a parchment paper. You can then transfer straight to the air fryer if you’re ready for them. If the dough is difficult to handle, place in the fridge for 30 minutes to firm up.
- Spray air fryer basket or tray with coconut oil or cooking spray.
- Add about 8-10 churros in the air fryer basket or tray. Spritz with oil.
- Cook on 400F/200C (french fry setting) for 5 minutes.
- Once done and while still warm, roll in a cinnamon sugar mixture or powdered sugar.
Recipe Tips
- These treats are best served warm.
- Use disposable cake decorator bags with tips that can be cut to any dimension to make these exactly how you want them.
- Don’t have cake decorator bags? Use a ziploc bag and cut the corner off to pipe the dough.
- Place dough in the fridge for up to 30 minutes before frying to help firm up the dough and make them easier to handle. Any longer than 30 mins and the dough will start to dry out.
- If you have an air fryer with a rack, you can cook 2 batches at once.
- Leave room in between churros in the Air Fryer so they have room to expand while frying.
- If having trouble getting the batter to stop coming out of the piping bag, use scissors or a knife to cut off the batter sticks.
- Don’t forget to spray them with cooking spray or coconut oil before frying to help get them to crisp up nicely.
What Do You Coat These With?
Folks, another reason these homemade churros are such perfect pieces of heaven is that they’re so versatile. You can change the coating up to create the ultimate dessert or snack.
Try these coatings:
- cinnamon and sugar mixed together
- cinnamon
- sugar
- powdered sugar
What Do You Dip Churros In?
Yet again, another thing to change out and to make your own favorite dessert or snack. Pick your favorite dipping sauce and try it out.
Here are some options to try:
- chocolate sauce
- caramel sauce
- cherry sauce
- coconut caramel sauce
- honey
- maple syrup
- nutella
- whipped cream
FAQs
How Long Do Air Fryer Churros Last?
Guys, these churro treats don’t last long in my house. They’re usually gone in the blink of an eye. These treats are best while still warm.
However, if you still have some dessert leftover, you can store in an airtight container for a day or two. They definitely won’t be as crisp or as tasty as when they’re first pulled out of the fryer and tossed in sweetness.
Why Do My Churros In Air Fryer Take Longer To Cook Than Yours?
Guys, it’s important to remember that all air fryers are different and can cook things in different amounts of time.
Another thing to consider if your churros are taking longer than mine to cook are the size of your treats. If you’re making larger ones, they may need longer to cook.
Make sure to check on your treats as they’re cooking so they don’t overcook. You may need to shake them in the basket midway through cooking so they don’t stick to the basket or tray.
Why Do My Treats Taste Like Eggs?
If you didn’t make your dough correctly, your treats may taste a little eggy. To prevent this from happening, make sure to remove the dough from the heat in step 2 before you mix in the flour and eggs.
Doing this helps the butter and other ingredients cool down before adding the eggs, so you don’t cook the eggs into the dough. And make sure to stir and mix the eggs in fast so they don’t cook as you’re mixing.
